Working with Conflict for Youth Workers

From 07-14 November, 17 youth from 16 countries got together in Moli de Mar, Vilanova I la Geltru, for an 8-day training course that aimed to help youth workers gain a new and improved appreciation of conflict. The training course entitled WORKING WITH CONFLICT, sought to deepen young people´s understanding about conflicts by closely looking at its nature and dunamics, and giving them practical skills and tools to transform day to day conflicts experienced by youth organisations. As the title suggests, the training dealt intensively with how to work with conflicts – practical tools of analysis, methods of intervention, nonviolent communication, as well as the basics of conflict transformation as a philosophy and technique through 3 lenses.

A team of 4 trainers from Spain, Kosovo and the Netherlands shared their experience and expertise in peace and conflict work through non-formal learning methodologies. Concepts and theories were introduced through strategy games, roleplays, and interactive activities to guide the participants through the “experiential learning” approach. Participants´ intercultural learning process was facilitated through group discussions and creative group work, as well through an organizational fair, a barbecue/dance night, and an intercultural “FRUIT PARTY.”

According to the participants, the main achievements of the training were; a better understanding of conflict (as a natural part of life) and a reflection of the participants´ styles in dealing with conflict; alternative ways of looking at conflict by using appropriate analysis tools; a better appreciation of the role of communication in conflicts; learning tips and skills in nonviolent communication;  putting into practice conflict intervention tools in different conflict situations faced by youth; learning how to use forum theater; learning the basics of conflict transformation (3 lenses of John Paul Lederach); understanding the importance of “working with conflict” and its relation to peacebuilding; and learning the basics of project management.

All participants were given a YOUTH PASS, with a list of skills and competences they have recognized they  acquired during the training course.
